Best Performing Mutual Funds: A Category-by-Category Breakdown
What a Year for Mutual Fund Investors
What a year it was! Even the risk-free, conservative side of the mutual fund world delivered returns that looked more like equity market gains. If you had money in money market or income funds, you were smiling — because interest rates were your best friend. Meanwhile, the stock market gave equity and asset allocation funds a massive boost.
Let's walk through every major category and highlight the best performing funds — both conventional and shariah-compliant.
Money Market Funds: The Risk-Free Category
Money market funds are the safest instruments you can pick. They're cash optimization tools, and for Islamic investors, there are shariah-compliant versions that still generate returns close to interest rates — though technically structured differently.
Conventional Money Market Funds
The best performing conventional money market fund was NIT Money Market Fund, with an annualized return of 21.69%. The second best was Welfare Trust Money Market Fund, returning 21.63% — just a few basis points behind.
Honestly, in this category, the difference between the top and second place is negligible. When interest rates are that high, they dominate everything. Even front-end load charges don't make a hell of a difference here.
Shariah-Compliant Money Market Funds
On the Islamic side, the best performer was Islamic Cash Fund, with a return of approximately 20.7%. The second best was Pak Qatar Cash Fund, returning 20.55%.
Again, not a lot of difference between them. It's all interest rate driven returns, one way or another.
Income Funds: Long-Term Interest Rate Plays
Income funds invest in longer-term instruments — primarily government and corporate bonds. Their performance is also heavily tied to interest rates, but they can deliver slightly higher returns than money market funds because of the longer duration.
Conventional Income Funds
The best performing conventional income fund was JS Income Fund. The next best was Welfare Trust Financial Income Fund, which returned 23.2%.
These are impressive numbers for income funds, especially when you compare them to the risk-free returns from money market funds.
Shariah-Compliant Income Funds
Among shariah-compliant income funds, the best performer was Islamic Special Income Fund, with the next best being another income fund that came in second. The performance difference between first and second was quite small, just like we saw in the money market category.
Asset Allocation Funds: Benefiting from Stocks
Asset allocation funds had truly abnormal returns this year, and that's primarily because of two things: the strong performance of income funds, and the stock market doing exceptionally well.
Conventional Asset Allocation Funds
The top conventional asset allocation fund returned a stunning 65% — which is remarkable for a category that usually manages risk across multiple asset classes.
The second best performer was Allied Energy Fund, returning 57%. These funds typically invest heavily in the stock market, especially in dividend-yielding stocks, and that strategy paid off big time.
Shariah-Compliant Asset Allocation Funds
On the shariah-compliant side, the best performing fund was Alhamra Asset Allocation Fund, with HBL Islamic Asset Allocation Fund taking the second spot. Both delivered outstanding returns, showing that Islamic investors also got to enjoy the equity market rally.
Equity Funds: The Stock Market Superstars
If you invested in equity funds at the end of 2022, then by the end of 2024, you were probably ecstatic. Equity funds gave the highest returns across all categories, and the long-term historical annualized returns were absolutely beaten this time.
Conventional Equity Funds
The best performing conventional equity fund was UBL Financial Fund, with an incredible 88% return. Right behind it was National Bank Financial Fund, returning 79%.
Those are superstar numbers for any fund, let alone a large established one.
Shariah-Compliant Equity Funds
In the shariah-compliant equity space, UBL Energy Fund was the major winner, posting the best performance in its category. The next best was NBP Islamic Energy Fund, which returned 65%.
Energy stocks, in particular, performed exceptionally well — driven by government energy reforms that gave the sector a strong boost. Once again, fund selection became extremely important: choosing the right fund over the wrong one could mean the difference between a good year and a life-changing year.
Key Takeaways for 2024 and Beyond
This year proved that mutual funds can deliver exceptional returns across all risk profiles. If you were in income funds, you captured high interest rates. If you were in equity or asset allocation funds, you rode the stock market rally — especially in the energy sector.
But the most important lesson is this: fund selection matters. The difference between the best and worst performer in the same category was massive. So as you look ahead to 2024 and beyond, don't just chase past performance — take the time to understand what the fund actually invests in.
And if you really want to evaluate a fund properly, you need to read its financial statements. I'll be covering that in detail — from the director's report to the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow — in an upcoming course. Stay tuned for that.
