Pakistan's Trade Numbers: The $15 Billion Surplus, Services Boom, and What Investors Should Watch

Let's talk about a fifteen billion dollar positive number. That's a big deal, and it matters a lot for how you think about Pakistan's economy right now. But before we get to the good stuff, you need to understand the other side of the coin — a 3.9 billion dollar trade deficit. That's very high, and it's the kind of number that gets people nervous.

So which one do you trust? Both, actually. Here's how it all fits together.

The Deficit That Keeps Getting Attention

If you're in Pakistan, you'll notice that investors are active in the market, and consumption-driven cyclical companies are doing real business. That tells you something. But the trade deficit is still a problem, and you can't ignore it.

The real effective exchange rate is a key metric here. When it comes to valuation, Pakistan's currency is overvalued. That's a big reason why we are investing in the market — and why we keep coming back to it, even when the macro picture looks messy.

Let me give you an example. On average, when we hit a crisis, we see the petroleum sector running at about 1.9 billion dollars, compared to 1.3 billion dollars in normal times. The impact of petrol prices and international oil prices is huge. If you can't normalize that, you can't even move a million dollars without feeling the ripple effects.

The Oil Price Factor

I have a very strong opinion about oil prices right now, because I'm looking at international surpluses. If you look at the portfolio data, the rate looks small — but let me give you a hint. Look at the international market and you'll see a surplus that is literally unprecedented in the history of the world. We've already seen the early signals of this, and the opinion is already forming. But here's the key insight you should reflect on: the services deficit is turning into a surplus, and that changes everything.

The Services Story Is the Real Story

Everyone talks about Pakistan's merchandise exports falling — and that's true, it's a huge issue. Investment into efficiencies, energy prices, and value addition — those are all real problems. But none of it is true for services.

If you look at any number of services, you'll see something remarkable. Pakistan's services exports — which are made up of tech and freelancing — are up 19 percent. Imports are only up 6 percent. In the past, Pakistan consistently ran a services deficit. In fact, that deficit was a constant theme — year after year, the services account bled dollars. But this is what has changed now. The deficit has flipped into a surplus, and that's a structural shift you need to pay attention to.

What FY26-27 Actually Looks Like

If you look at the last number, the run-up is quite fast, but the final number is not going to be as dramatic as the monthly momentum suggests. If you multiply the current run rate by twelve, the export figure for FY27 could land in the right ballpark — and the import run rate is following a similar pattern.

The current account impact from FY26 to FY27 will be around the positive surplus number. And yes, that number is positive. That's the fifteen billion dollar story.

But if you want to continue this trend, you have to understand what's driving it. This is very important. If you want to buy a dollar, you need the rupee support that comes from a current account surplus. If you want to buy into new growth this year, you have to look at what's actually growing — new export services, or imports growing at the slowest pace. The slower you grow relative to the percentage of the economy, the more you will have to pay extra for everything.

Investor Takeaways

Yes, this is a very low profit margin scenario in some ways. But for any top-down investor, these numbers become very important. They tell you two things:

  • Sector allocation — where the money is flowing and which sectors benefit from these macro trends.
  • Valuation — both at the sector level and at the individual company level.

The companies that are positioned to ride the services export boom, or that can weather the oil price volatility, are the ones worth your attention. The macro numbers are ugly in places — the trade deficit, the overvaluation — but the services surplus is a genuine bright spot, and it's changing the way the whole balance sheet works.

Pay attention to the numbers that actually move the needle. The surplus is real. The services boom is real. And for investors who are paying attention, that's where the opportunity is.

Thanks for watching.
